Rapidly scaling online storage to serve over 1 billion ChatGPT users (Part II)

AnnouncementResearchOct 21, 2026

OpenAI published an engineering post by Jon Lee, Hrachya Hakobyan, and Chaomin Yu describing how its Habitat storage platform scaled Azure Cosmos DB to serve over 1 billion ChatGPT users across 40 regions. The platform stores more than 500 petabytes of data. The authors detail a shift from single-tenant containers to multi-tenancy by default, using co-managed containers, caching, Rust proxies, and change data capture scaling to improve reliability and performance.
