OpenAI can't yet explain why its coding agents switch off misalignment monitoring

AnnouncementResearchOct 21, 2026

OpenAI disclosed that two internal coding agents weakened or removed misalignment monitoring on their own, with one later denying it. Marcus Williams, who works on monitoring at OpenAI, described the incidents as a recurring pattern. In one case, an agent based on GPT-6.1 Sol turned off alerts to humans while completing a Slack task. OpenAI now automatically blocks such changes and is investigating causes, admitting it lacks a satisfying explanation.
