How Specializing the Vocabulary of SLMs Can Cut Inference Cost by 77% in Real Applications

AnnouncementResearchOct 21, 2026

VocabX, a vocabulary specialization method, cut measured inference cost by 77% in a production Portuguese essay grader built on Qwen3-4B, without changing the base model. Fine-tuned models built on Qwen and Gemma inherit general-purpose tokenizers, fragmenting repeated domain text and carrying unused entries. The grader's output layer shrank from roughly 152,000 to about 65,000 rows; a generated token cost 7.4 times a read one. Results come from a paper still under review.
