Why harnesses matter for energy efficiency

AchievementResearchOct 16, 2026

Neuralwatt's analysis of a month of cloud traffic found that agent harnesses' prompt-caching behavior drives inference energy use. Across clients, uncached input ranged from 1.6% to 11.1%; a cache miss roughly doubled request energy, 2.5 times on GLM-5.3. Chad Gibson reports that past 128k tokens, turns re-reading more than half their prompt cost prefill equal to about 600 normal turns. Lab tests traced cache breaks to harnesses editing already-sent prompts.
