Claude reveals ECDSA curve origins

AchievementResearchOct 16, 2026

Anthropic's Frontier Red Team reports that Claude identified the origins of the NIST elliptic-curve seeds: outputs of the C library's lrand48 generator seeded with Unix timestamps, not hashes of a passphrase as rumored. The finding covers NIST P-192 through P-521 and ANSI X9.62 seeds. The team states this is not a cryptographic break and increases confidence that the curves, adopted by NIST in 2000 from NSA-provided seeds, contain no backdoors. Neal Koblitz and Alfred Menezes previously documented the controversy.
