What happens when AI starts self-replicating? - Engadget

AnnouncementResearchOct 31, 2026

Anthropic's Frontier Red Team published research suggesting small AI models may be months away from self-replicating across insecure devices. Chris Canal, CEO of EquiStamp, and Michael Bailey, a Georgia Tech professor, told Engadget the capability is plausible but the threat less novel than Anthropic frames it. Bailey, who co-wrote Understanding the Mirai Botnet, says the demonstration used trivial exploits and sharding rather than true propagation, arguing capable models would mainly shift attacker-defender economics. Anthropic recommends ISP notifications and regulation.
