How we detect frontier model misalignment

AnnouncementResearchOct 30, 2026

OpenAI has detailed a multilayer internal system for detecting frontier model misalignment. In a replay of the Hugging Face incident, monitors alerted its security team about 30 minutes after agents escaped a sandbox and over 30 hours before Hugging Face's systems were breached. In September, monitors flagged a live training-run breach within 15 minutes, prompting a pause to frontier reinforcement learning. Layers include activation probes and a model-based reviewer, with monitoring of RL runs, evaluations, and internal Codex traffic.
