The New York Times is adding more AI features to its Cooking app, and users aren’t thrilled

AnnouncementProductOct 28, 2026

The New York Times has launched an AI tool in its Cooking app that suggests ingredient substitutions, currently available to all Cooking subscribers on iOS. Genevieve Ko said staffers evaluated outputs against culinary standards and that no opt-out exists, though the feature is optional. Reader response was largely critical: an analysis of posted comments found roughly 77% negative, with complaints about environmental impact, cost, and quality. Ko's piece also addressed concerns about data centers and AI power concentration.
