State propaganda in some Chinese AI models is only "a thin layer" that fine-tuning can strip away

AchievementModelNov 7, 2026

Nous Research fine-tuned Alibaba's Qwen3.8-27B into Arete-27B, cutting the model's propaganda rate from 22 percent to 0.9 percent. Supervised fine-tuning on 53 million tokens left general capabilities largely unchanged, with Arete scoring 65.60 percent on Nous's internal Hermes Bench versus 65.77 percent for the base model. Nous says the result shows Chinese state bias in open-weight models is "a thin layer." Weights and data are public.
