Thinking Machines' Inkling 2 Small claims top spot among western open-weight models

AchievementModelNov 6, 2026

Thinking Machines, the startup founded by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, released Inkling 2 Small, a 594-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model. It scores 31 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, 18 points above its predecessor and roughly on par with Google's Gemini 3.8 Flash, with notable gains in agentic tasks. However, it costs about six times more per task than the previous model. Weights will follow under an Apache 2.0 license after safety testing.
