OpenAI is finally merging ChatGPT's chat and Work tabs

OpenAI has emailed users about plans to combine the Chat and Work tabs inside the ChatGPT desktop app, aiming to reduce confusion caused by having multiple sections and tabs. The company says the merged experience will let people move from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT carry out tasks, such as building a website or creating a presentation, while they review and guide the work. Files and plugins can be brought into the single space. The change will first reach select users for feedback before a broader rollout. Codex will stay a separate experience in the desktop app, but ChatGPT and Codex will now share one token allowance pool. OpenAI states most users will not be affected, though some may hit usage limits and need to wait for resets more often, depending on their usage and model. The move parallels Anthropic, which merged Claude's chat and Cowork functions into one screen in September, suggesting a broader industry push to simplify assistant interfaces.
