Microsoft says AI agents are like insider threats as 'frontier models can't be trusted'

AnnouncementProductOct 19, 2026

Microsoft introduced Guardian Agents, a security feature that monitors the AI agents enterprises deploy, as part of Project Perception. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has warned that enterprises should not rely on AI model providers' safety assurances, arguing that oversight of agents must be independent of the labs supplying them. Microsoft also added agent detection to Defender, capable of identifying up to 60 agent types, plus features limiting agents' data access and requiring human approval for risky decisions.
