SpeculationPolicyOct 19, 2026

Speaking at TechCrunch Disrupt, Hugging Face chief policy officer Irene Solaiman said AI model benchmarking methods are complicated and still maturing, requiring a more consistent science. She questioned whether results can be trusted or reproduced, noting open weights improve access. Evaluations become ineffective quickly, and standards for embedded third-party evaluators remain undeveloped. Solaiman added that agentic evaluations are difficult and expensive, and the industry may need a uniform, industry-wide approach.
