A YC startup is putting $1M behind five unsolved materials science problems for AI

AnnouncementResearchNov 5, 2026

Discovered Materials, a Y Combinator-backed startup, announced a $1 million prize pool for AI models that solve five open problems in materials science, including cuprate superconductivity and improvements to Density Functional Theory. Co-founder Advaith Sridhar said the challenges, developed with academic advisors, will serve as goalposts for measuring AI progress. Frontier models given days of autonomous work made little headway on the problems. Sridhar said the company expects to find industrially useful materials within a year.
