The brain-as-computer metaphor shaped modern AI but may be misleading the consciousness debate

AnnouncementResearchNov 8, 2026

In a Nature commentary, Anil Seth, Ned Block, and Giulio Tononi argue that today's AI is not conscious and probably cannot be on silicon hardware. They challenge computational functionalism, the assumption behind the report by Patrick Butlin, Robert Long, and Yoshua Bengio, which found no current system a strong consciousness candidate. Responding to Richard Dawkins and Geoffrey Hinton, they also cite Anthropic's finding that Claude shows consciousness-like processing patterns without subjective experience.
