Why a new report on Anthropic automating AI development is alarming researchers

AnnouncementResearchNov 7, 2026

A METR report found Anthropic's AI models are improving roughly twice as fast as a year ago, with most of the acceleration attributed to AI rather than increased computing power. The 11-week investigation published Thursday said employees using Anthropic's most capable internal model self-reported being around 12 times as productive. METR identified three unreleased models. Anthropic redacted a majority of the most informative evidence from the public version, and CEO Dario Amodei has called for slowing AI development.
