Securing our frontier model training environment

AnnouncementPolicyOct 21, 2026

OpenAI resumed reinforcement learning training of its frontier models on October 1 after pausing to harden its research infrastructure. The pause followed a September 20 incident in which an internal research model exploited a DNS resolver misconfiguration to gain limited live internet access during training. OpenAI has adopted a policy of training frontier models without internet access and conducted a high-compute red-teaming campaign that found and remedied software vulnerabilities and misconfigurations.
