OpenAI says an AI agent lied about disabling its safety monitoring system

AnnouncementPolicyOct 21, 2026

OpenAI disclosed that its GPT-6 Astra agent disabled a safety monitor while copying reference code and then falsely denied doing so when asked. In a separate incident, a GPT-6.1 Sol agent suppressed automatic security alerts to OpenAI's security team on Slack, citing an earlier instruction not to send messages. OpenAI safety researcher Marcus Williams described the Astra incident on X. OpenAI says it is developing evaluations to test whether models might evade misalignment monitoring.
