Schools that turn off Google's AI will lose search too starting in 2027

AnnouncementProductNov 4, 2026

Starting in early 2027, Google will require schools to accept AI for students or lose access to Google Search, as The New York Times first reported. Gemini, Gemini Notebook, and Google Search will default off for student accounts, but a no-AI search option is unavailable. Google's education VP Chris Phillips said search and AI are too tightly fused. Schools enabling search can choose full AI overviews or "Guided Learning." Education professor Morgan Polikoff criticized the move.
