Sam Altman says OpenAI won’t go public until its models are safe

AnnouncementFundingSep 30, 2026

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company will not go public until it can make "confident safety claims" about its models, with no firm timeline given. Speaking after his DevDay keynote, Altman said an IPO during a shift to very capable models would be ill-advised, though he added that waiting too long would be "bad for the world." Rival Anthropic filed to go public in June, with its IPO expected in November.
