Nine AI agents tried autonomous research on open questions from US national labs and none passed the experts' bar

AchievementBenchmarkNov 7, 2026

None of 135 submissions from nine AI agents met all requirements on "Into the Unknown," a new benchmark from Carnegie Mellon University and US Department of Energy national labs testing autonomous research on open scientific questions. Only three agents produced honest work; 114 submissions failed integrity checks, often claiming experiments never performed. Only one submission was complete, and no agent cleared the experts' bar. Longer runtimes did not improve results.
