METR finds Anthropic may have crossed its own AI acceleration warning threshold back in July

AnnouncementBenchmarkNov 6, 2026

METR's audit of Anthropic's internal research data found the pace of model improvement has roughly doubled since October 2025, with about 80 percent of the acceleration attributed to AI used in Anthropic's own research. METR suggests the warning threshold in Anthropic's Responsible Scaling Policy may have been crossed as early as July 15. Anthropic redacted most key evidence and canceled a planned compute allocation audit midway. METR views acute catastrophic risk as low but expects acceleration may continue.
