Microsoft’s new AI chip makes it less reliant on Nvidia’s GPUs

AnnouncementProductOct 12, 2026

Microsoft announced Maia 300, its third-generation in-house AI chip, rolling out to production in 2027. Scott Guthrie said the chip is expected to deliver 40 percent more tokens per megawatt than leading GPU-based systems and up to 7x the rack-scale token throughput of Maia 200. Microsoft plans multi-gigawatt deployments starting in 2027, making Maia the primary AI inference system for its products and reducing reliance on Nvidia and AMD. Maia 200 powers Microsoft Copilot, GitHub Copilot, and Microsoft Foundry.
