StateBench: Testing how language models track state changes over long documents

AnnouncementBenchmarkNov 3, 2026

StateBench is a new benchmark measuring how well language models track changing entity states across long documents, spanning four difficulty levels from immutable assignment to reference-based swaps. Evaluations show recurrent and hybrid architectures like Gated DeltaNet generalize farther than transformers when trained directly on these tasks, while frontier models still fail on harder variants as inputs lengthen. Test scenarios include narrative examples such as John giving Mary an item placed in his backpack by Edward.
