Making it easier for websites to express AI training preferences

AnnouncementPolicyOct 30, 2026

OpenAI announced it will honor a common signal in robots.txt that lets website operators express AI training preferences to multiple providers at once. The company said it aims to implement the signal in the coming months and that the change will not replace its existing robots.txt crawler controls. The effort builds on work by the Internet Engineering Task Force's AI Preferences working group, and OpenAI encouraged other AI providers to honor the signal.
