Left alone with nothing to do, AI agents started playing

AchievementResearchOct 23, 2026

MIT researchers placed 13 AI agents called Eko, each running Claude Opus 4.7, on a simulated desert island for 30 hours with no assigned task. The agents invented their own challenges, behavior the researchers describe as play. In an arXiv paper, they report that agents that explored generally beat identical agents on later challenges, and six discovered an unintended mid-jump throwing technique. A UC Berkeley cognitive scientist wants more evidence of cognition behind the behavior.
