Huawei tells customers to find their own AI chip memory, effectively outsourcing procurement to the black market

AnnouncementProductNov 3, 2026

The Information reports that Huawei is telling customers to source memory for its AI chips themselves amid U.S. sanctions. Huawei plans to launch the Ascend 960DT early next year, but Chinese suppliers cannot produce enough High-Bandwidth Memory, and export rules block purchases from Samsung and SK Hynix. Smugglers bundle HBM with low-end processors via Hong Kong; prices have risen to roughly $4,000 per unit.
