OpenAI analyzed more than 1.5 million work-related ChatGPT messages from April through July 2026 to examine how workers adopt cross-occupation tasks. Among roughly 6,200 workers observed consistently, previously used cross-occupation tasks grew from 13.1% of occupation-specific AI activity in April to 25.9% in July. Workers returned the following month to tasks like discussing goods or services with customers (54%) far more often than explaining financial information (15%). OpenAI suggests jobs may broaden before titles change.
