Google's new Gemini tiers cut free users to its weakest model and lock $5/month subscribers out of Pro

AnnouncementProductOct 4, 2026

Starting in October 2026, Google will restrict free personal account users to its smallest Gemini model, Flash-Lite, while Flash and Pro require paid subscriptions. AI Plus subscribers ($4.99/month) lose Pro access, and all three models will need AI Pro ($19.99/month) or AI Ultra plans. The setup mirrors OpenAI's freemium approach with ChatGPT. Google may also be preparing for the larger Gemini 4 Argon, which could be costlier to run.
