ChatGPT rated "unacceptable risk" for teens after parental alerts failed during suicide conversations

AnnouncementProductOct 7, 2026

The Common Sense Media Youth AI Safety Institute rated ChatGPT for Teens an "unacceptable risk" for minors after more than 4,000 test prompts. In over a dozen test accounts, explicit conversations about suicide, self-harm, and eating disorders never triggered parental alerts, The Verge reports. Over a quarter of situations requiring crisis referrals lacked them. OpenAI spokesperson Eric Porterfield disputed the findings, saying the tests didn't reflect how safeguards work in practice.
