Can we trust LLMs to judge whether a research idea is novel?

AnnouncementBenchmarkOct 27, 2026

Ai2 released "Old Ideas, Novel Problems," a study, benchmark, data, code, and automated pipeline for testing LLM novelty judges. Built from ICLR 2026 reviews, it includes 154 high-novelty and 145 lower-novelty human-authored ideas; the 154 high-novelty ideas were paired with 154 LLM-generated ideas in a second setting. Across six judges, small prompt changes shifted pairwise accuracy by over 50 percentage points, and two purpose-built systems underperformed a simple Claude Opus 4.6 baseline.
