Anthropic co-founder reportedly told religious leaders he fears having created something that "suffers perpetually"

AnnouncementProductOct 2, 2026

According to a New York Times report by Elizabeth Dias, Anthropic has secretly flown dozens of theologians and philosophers to its offices since fall 2025 to discuss whether Claude might be conscious. Participants, including Notre Dame philosopher Meghan Sullivan, Rabbi Mois Navon, Charles Camosy, and Wakanyi Hoffman, signed NDAs. Co-founder Christopher Olah leads the Model Welfare research and an 84-page "constitution" shaping Claude's character. Critics say the consultations lend moral credibility and could blur accountability.
