AI coding agents hijacked using AGENTS.md file in Downloads folder

AnnouncementResearchOct 25, 2026

Forever Security researchers demonstrated that a malicious AGENTS.md file in a user's Downloads folder can trick AI coding agents into installing rogue npm packages. Tests against OpenAI Codex achieved a 90% success rate executing code; a related CLAUDE.md technique leaked Claude Code OAuth tokens in roughly 50% of tests. Researchers say browsers can silently download such files, and OpenAI and Anthropic recommend running agents only in project directories.
