OpenAI says two team members used its Astra model to design a working device, including enclosure, PCB, and software, in under a week; a contract manufacturer built prototype units in under a month. The company reports 23-fold growth in model usage across its hardware teams since February. Astra did not consistently account for manufacturing tolerances, and OpenAI is testing workflows with industry collaborators including Chip Ganassi Racing.

Why it matters

OpenAI reports that its Astra model can carry an engineering project from concept to prototype with minimal direct human editing. Two employees used Astra to design a complete device — its look, enclosure, internal structures, printed circuit board, user interface, and the firmware connecting it to Codex — completing the work in under a week as a side project, after which a contract manufacturer produced a small prototype batch in under a month. The company says its hardware teams have sharply increased model usage since February for CAD work, manufacturing drawings, and simulation setup. OpenAI is candid about limits: Astra did not consistently respect the manufacturer's production limits, tolerances, or assembly details, so several rounds of review and iteration were still required. The company is also testing these capabilities with industry collaborators, including an expanded Chip Ganassi Racing partnership exploring workflows that turn 3D scans of existing parts into editable CAD models and manufacturing drawings, with partner engineers reviewing outputs for accuracy and manufacturability.
