Wikimedia Foundation Tries to Save Itself From Oblivion by Brokering AI Copyright Deal

AnnouncementPolicyOct 30, 2026

The Wikimedia Foundation filed an amicus brief Thursday in the New York Times' lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, arguing both sides' fair-use positions are "overbroad." The nonprofit proposes letting AI models such as ChatGPT and Copilot train on freely available online content while restricting reproduction of that content in outputs. It also says LLMs support its mission, and warns that a ruling that misapplies fair use could threaten free knowledge and public access to information.
