VCs will make billions on Anthropic's IPO, but Amazon is set to make much (much) more

SpeculationFundingOct 28, 2026

Anthropic's S-1 shows Amazon holds $6.2 billion in convertible notes, its entire debt load, and Amazon's own filings value those notes at $97.9 billion. Amazon also invested $10 billion in nonvoting preferred stock, bringing its total investment to about $18 billion. Venture firms Menlo Ventures, Sequoia, Sound Ventures, and Spark Capital each hold stakes below the 5% principal stockholders threshold, per Bloomberg-reported figures. The S-1 warns some cloud providers also build rival AI models.
