Researchers at North Carolina State University have demonstrated three techniques to prevent backdoor attacks in AI models, described across four papers. The techniques address AI models at the feature, architecture, and weight levels, aiming to remove or mitigate embedded triggers without significant performance losses, according to corresponding author Jung-Eun Kim. The team also proposed "secret alignment," repurposing backdoor triggers to provide restricted access for authorized users. Papers were presented at NeurIPS, ICLR, and ICML.
