Perplexity Open-Sources SPACE, a Firecracker MicroVM Sandbox for AI Agents

AnnouncementProductOct 17, 2026

Perplexity has open-sourced SPACE, its sandbox platform for agent code execution, under Apache 2.0 on GitHub. Each agent task runs in its own Firecracker microVM, with credentials and egress policy enforced outside the guest. The Rust codebase requires a Linux x86_64 host with KVM and btrfs. In red-team tests, 0 of 108 sandbox escape attempts succeeded; egress bypasses occurred in 11 of 54 partial-network runs before fixes, with none after.
