Palette: teaching a small model to build decks in your design language

AchievementModelNov 3, 2026

IBM fine-tuned a 20B open-weight model, Palette, which ranks first on two of three domains on PresentBench while following the IBM Design Language. The model splits deck building into two roles handled by one LoRA adapter: a designer writes a structured JSON brief and a coder writes the pptxgenjs code for each slide. Training used about 1,000 synthetic decks, roughly 10,000 slides, generated by a teacher model with counterfactual reasoning. A checker repairs overflowing or overlapping slides.
