Asta has open-sourced AstaBrief 8B, an 8-billion-parameter model that generates cited scientific reports from research questions and retrieved literature excerpts. Available in Asta's Generate a report feature as Fast mode alongside Claude-powered Thinking mode, it averages 51.1 seconds per report versus 178.5 seconds for Thinking mode, roughly 3.5× faster. Trained with supervised fine-tuning and direct preference optimization, the model and its training data are released openly, letting institutions run it on their own infrastructure.
