Microsoft offers a quarter of its workforce voluntary severance while shielding AI-critical teams

AnnouncementTalentOct 31, 2026

Microsoft is offering voluntary severance to roughly 60,000 employees—about a quarter of its workforce—across the U.S., Canada, India, and the UK, Chief People Officer Amy Coleman announced in a memo. Copilot is fully included, while units central to Microsoft's AI strategy, including data centers, cybersecurity, and quantum computing, are excluded. It is the second such program this year. CFO Amy Hood says Microsoft plans about $170 billion in AI infrastructure spending for 2026.
