Meet Anthropic’s sandbox-runtime: OS-Level Sandboxing for AI Agents, No Containers

AnnouncementProductOct 24, 2026

Anthropic has open-sourced sandbox-runtime (srt), the OS-level sandbox behind Claude Code's sandboxed bash tool, as an Apache-2.0 npm package. It enforces filesystem and network restrictions on entire process trees without containers, using Seatbelt on macOS and bubblewrap on Linux; Windows support is alpha. Anthropic self-reports an 84% reduction in Claude Code permission prompts internally. The tool works with any agent, MCP server, or CLI program, with deny-by-default network access.
