Judge dismisses Chegg and Penske antitrust lawsuits targeting Google AI search

AnnouncementPolicyOct 1, 2026

US District Judge Amit Mehta has dismissed antitrust lawsuits filed by Chegg and Penske Media against Google over AI overviews and traffic losses. Mehta ruled that Google's conduct is not illegal under antitrust law, writing that "an expectation is not an agreement." Chegg claimed Google illegally scraped its content for Gemini models, while Penske, owner of Rolling Stone and Variety, alleged unfair content harvesting with no opt-out. Mehta previously found Google violated antitrust law in the DOJ's search case.
