Improving Fable 5 Safeguards

Anthropic has updated the biology safeguards on Claude Fable 5 so that the model triggers far fewer fallbacks, in which a biology-related query is rerouted to the less capable Opus 5. The company says internal testing showed a large reduction in these fallbacks across its products, meaning Fable 5 can now handle everyday health questions, educational biology content, and some clinical support for healthcare professionals. Requests the company deems dual-use, including virology, toxicology, and molecular design, still fall back to Opus 5, so the model remains unavailable for professional biology research and drug development. The company explains the reasoning behind its cautious launch: Fable 5 can outperform experts on some complex biological tasks, and its assessments indicate the model could offer meaningful uplift to a malicious actor, including one pursuing biological weapons. Because beneficial and harmful biology work often look alike, the company initially blocked nearly all biology queries and accepted false positives while it refined its safety classifiers. It cites trusted access pathways as its route to eventually serving frontier biology users.
