How Cursor Router chooses the right model for the task · Cursor

AnnouncementProductAug 6, 2026

Cursor launched Cursor Router on July 22 with two configurations, Auto Intelligence and Auto Balance. Auto Intelligence delivers above Fable-level user satisfaction at 68% lower cost, while Auto Balance outperforms Opus 4.8 at 41% lower cost. The system uses Compass, a complexity predictor, to determine whether a turn requires a frontier model, then applies a task taxonomy to select the best-performing model based on real developer traffic data.
