Google joins OpenAI and Anthropic in promising new scraping controls - Engadget

AnnouncementPolicyOct 31, 2026

Google, Anthropic, OpenAI, and Microsoft have committed to honoring a new robots.txt directive letting publishers block AI-training scrapers. The proposal, under consideration at IETF, was written by Anthropic's Kevin Kelley and creates a single common signal replacing per-crawler rules. It applies only to future scraping and does not remove search indexing. Anthropic already supports it; Microsoft and Google plan support in 2027, and OpenAI within coming months.
