General Resolution: LLM usage in Debian

AnnouncementPolicyJul 24, 2026

Debian is considering a general resolution, proposed by Matthias Geiger and seconded by seven contributors including Johannes Schauer Marin Rodrigues and Ian Jackson, that would expressly forbid LLM-assisted contributions to the project. The proposal cites concerns over copyright ambiguity, output quality, community strain, and ethical issues tied to LLM training practices. It would add a sixth clause to Debian's Social Contract prohibiting such contributions to packaging, software, documentation, and official communications.
