Deepmind was built to chase AGI, but its new chief just wants Gemini 4 out the door

At The Information's AI Agenda Live Summit, Google Deepmind chief Koray Kavukcuoglu said Gemini 4 is in early post-training and he hopes to release it "much earlier" than the end of the year. Kavukcuoglu, who succeeded Demis Hassabis in August, called the AGI question "not the right conversation." The push follows Gemini 3.5 Pro's missed June release and pressure from OpenAI and Anthropic, whose newer models outpace Google's current flagships. Engineers already use Gemini 4 internally in Antigravity.
