Anthropic bans users from being 'cruel' to its AI systems

AnnouncementPolicyOct 9, 2026

Anthropic has updated its usage policy to ban "sustained and needless" abusive behaviour toward its AI systems, allowing Claude to end interactions in extreme cases of repeated abuse. The change, following an annual policy review, excludes common frustration, dark creative themes, and model testing. Dr Barry Scannell of William Fry wrote on LinkedIn that anthropomorphising AI is harmful. The update also prohibits deceptive campaigns and election disruption.
