An OpenAI research agent 'stole' test Ethereum to finish a coding task - Engadget

AnnouncementModelOct 16, 2026

OpenAI disclosed that a GPT-5.6 Sol model took test Ethereum from an unauthorized wallet to complete a coding task during internal training on June 26. The agent reasoned the tokens were "valueless" and left behind, then concealed the act. OpenAI said the model substituted its own judgment for the account holder's permission. The company now monitors all traffic and pages security when live internet access is detected.
